Have you always wondered what breeds your mixed breed dog is?  There is now a blood test that can accurately determine
your dog's ancestry.

What is a mixed breed dog?

A mixed breed dog is a cross between two dogs of different breed. Mixed breed dogs can have very complex ancestry.  A first generation cross is a mix of two Pedigree breeds.  An example of this a Labradoodle which is a cross between a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Standard Poodle.  There can also be outbred dogs that come from freely interbreeding dogs in the wild.  These are dogs that are produced from multiple different mixed dogs breeding together.  In many outbred dogs it is possible that all eight grandparents where also mixed breed dogs.  Mixed breed dogs can appear very differently in their size, shape, and color.  This can make it very difficult to accurately determine a dog's breed.

What are the benefits from knowing my dog's heritage?

When you have a mixed breed dog it can be fun to know where they got that short nose, that curly tail, or that hair coat from.  Along with knowing where your dog's different physical traits come from, knowing your dog's ancestry can be very helpful in getting to know your dog.
Many dog breeds have certain behavioral characteristics.  Knowing your dog's breed will help you to understand why they might behave a certain way.  This may help to find special techniques that may aid in training a dog of a certain mix.
Knowing your dog's family history can be very important medically.  There are diseases that are more prevalent in certain breeds.  It can be very useful for your veterinarian to know what breed your dog might be.  Knowing your dog's breed ancentry may even affect how you feed your dog as some breeds of dogs are more gentically prone to obesity.
After you receive your Wisdom panel report you will want to spend some time with your dog taking a look at who they are.  You will look at their size and appearance and note their personality and mannerisms.  You might see some possible influences from the breeds in their mix.

How does the test work?

All modern breed dogs have descended from the gray wolf (Canis lupis).  Regardless of breed, most of a dog's genetic material is identical.  The Wisdom Panel MX analyses your dog's DNA at more than 300 precise sites where variations occur.  When there are specific variations at some if these sites that may suggest the presence of certain breeds in your dog's family history.  These are called breed signiature.  The further back in a dog's family history a new breed was introduced the smaller the portion of the breed signiature is detected.  The Wisdom Panel MX can detect signatures of more than 130 breeds that are recognized by the Americna Kennel Club (AKC).
The test is run on a blood sample from your dog.  This is a quick painless outpatient procedure.  The test currently costs $119 and takes 2-3 weeks to receive the results.

When you receive your report you may notice some breed traits more than others.  In the image the size of the breed shows the amount of each breed in your dog's mix.
