Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center

Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment at Desert Inn Animal Hospital

Desert Inn Animal Hospital is the only veterinary hospital in Nevada and Utah to provide a permanent treatment option for feline hyperthyroidism through our Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center in Las Vegas.

Our state-certified treatment and recovery areas are in a separate part of the hospital where all precautions have been taken for the safety and comfort of the cats receiving treatment.

What is feline hyperthyroidism?

As in humans, the thyroid gland produces a hormone responsible for the body’s metabolism or production of energy for body functions. In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid becomes overactive—often due to a benign tumor—and produces too much of its normal hormone.

What symptoms do cats show when they have hyperthyroidism?

Not all cats show the same symptoms, but if you notice any of the following symptoms, we recommend you contact our veterinarians:

What treatment is offered at the Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center?

Radioactive iodine therapy is now considered the treatment of choice in areas where it is available and can be afforded. It involves one injection of radioactive iodine (I-131) given under the skin. The iodine "finds" and destroys all diseased cells without harming any normal tissue. Cats remain in the hospital for two days until the radiation levels return to an acceptable level.

In addition to providing radioactive iodine therapy for our own clients, the Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center of Desert Inn Animal Hospital regularly treats patients referred to us by their family veterinarian.

If you believe your cat may be a candidate, speak with your family veterinarian about a referral or contact Desert Inn Animal Hospital for referral information.
